As expected, with all the controversy of the 2009 Myrtle Beach elections, it's not over.
Yesterday's elections was just round one as a run off for the Mayor's seat and two City Council seats will have to be decided on Tuesday, November 17.
In the mayoral race, with such a larger number of candidates, no one captured the 50 percent + 1 vote needed to win the mayor's race outright. So a runoff between mayor John Rhodes and former mayor Mark McBride be be held.
The Mayoral Election Results
John Rhodes - 2,540 (48%)
Mark McBride - 1,472 (28%)
Bill Howard - 944 (18%)
Matthew McCarty - 222 (4%)
Beatrice Catalano - 167 (3%)
"If I didn't win outright, I wanted to come in second place in a runoff," said McBride. "Ninety-six percent of the time the second place candidate wins the runoff election."
McBride won the mayors race in a runoff twelve years ago after coming in second to the sitting mayor. He lost office in a runoff against John Rhodes who came second as well.
Bill Howard, who came in third has already endorsed and thrown his support behind McBride.
For City Council, Wayne Gray retained his seat and at least one other incumbent will also be reelected in a runoff between three candidates for two seats. The runoff for two seats will be between Randal Wallace (I), Mike Lowder and Chuck Martino (I).
City Council Election Results
Wayne Gray - 2,623
