The Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board has denied the 30,000 square foot Wonderworks attraction for Broadway at the Beach, which was to open in 2010.

The decision was made on August 20 by a vote of 4-3 against the plan.

“It wouldn’t be fair to let tourism weigh one way or another with the CAB,” said Larry Bragg, the CAB chairman. “Tourism does not come into play or the economy.”

Many board members say the structure was "glaring in size and scope," and suggested that Wonderworks modify its plans or relocate to another location.

Bragg told the Myrtle Beach Herarld its height was inconsistent with surrounding structures.

The plans show for an arcade art gallery, laser tag and a mirror maze as part of the proposed attraction.

A call placed to Wonderworks' headquarters in Orlando earlier this week was not returned.

Figures. I had a funny feeling something was up. I would think the structure would be fine in the confines of BATB which has many eccentric looking buildings like Hard Rock Cafe or especially Planet Hollywood across the street.

I guess it's okay to have all the eyesores from 14th Ave. N to 14th Ave. South (eeks). Not to mention an abandoned Nascar Cafe and a neglected-looking Nascar Speedpark pond along 17. Are they growing a mosquito farm in that slim?

That place would have been a perfect fit for this town. It would have brought in alot more much-needed off-season business to Broadway due to it being an indoor attraction.

We were just at Broadway last night. We hadn't been there in awhile. Boy, that place is looking pretty junky with all that carny concession crapola. Alot of the cool stores have given way to more tacky T-shirt shops. Ever since they put those old Pavillion rides there, the clientle has changed.

PARK MANAGEMENT WHO BOUGHT THE NASCAR AND PAVILLION SUCK. I found out from workers that they are cheap and have not fixed anything at all. The swings at the park are broken. they do not tilt all way and sit hanging on one side and it jars you eally bad. The catepillar no longer has a canopy bc they did not want to replace it when the wind broke a bolt on it one day. Also the ogan needs fixing and they said they are going to junk it. WTF do they not realize how big of a daw that the organ and catepillar are. The catepillar was one of few ides with working canopies on them anymore. Also that ogan was i think over 100 years old. I know personally people who have come across the country just to see it. SO PARC GET YOUR STUFF STAIGHT AND PUT SOME MONEY INTO THIS PLACE BEFORE YOU RUIN THE WHOLE BROADWAY AT THE BEACH THEME AND FEEL.

Well that pretty much explains the downfall of those places. When you used to drive past Nascar Speedpark (even in the off-season) they'd have that place lit up, fountains going, etc. There was always a buzz going on in that area. Now, you pass by at night when they're closed, and it's pitch black except for the big sign on the bypass.

Myrtle Waves is looking kinda shabby, too. Can't they afford to replace those flourescent bulbs in that big sign out front, geez? They're very careless when it comes to the high-profile things like signage and curb appeal.

And who wants to stay at Broadway's Hampton Inn by the lake when you got the tacky lights of those carny rides? I was wondering why the Wave Swinger was dismantled earlier this year, the Catapillar with no canopy, and the organ closed off.

They have been in trouble with other parks that they own or manage .This is a sign of the times for them .

The swings were running fine when I rode them in August with my gf and family. Albeit a little slower than Freestyle's but they seemed average for year round weathering swings. The caterpillar is a ride i'll never get on again. It's become absolute trash sitting in that little coordined off section of BATB. The planks are rotting away, the bulbs are broken (serious electrical hazard), the sound system is shot and it's the roughest ride of its kind i've ever been on, beat me till i literally had bruises.

So tomorrow (Thursday) is the big day when the almighty "Community Appearance Board" powers-to-be will vote again for approval of the Wonderworks attraction. I hope they make a wise decision this time around.

The community appearance board has some serious issues. They don't want new business but won't demand the demolition of old unsightly buildings. So what is it that they do, exactly? Let me guess. It's a panel of people mainly over the age of 65.
